Áine Rock, now 49, stood in her kitchen when her husband asked, "Are we ever going to have sex again?" The question sparked the end of their 17-year marriage and her decision to become a Pleasure Priestess.
She answered, "I don't know. Is this it? Is this doing it for you?" and began to doubt whether she wanted to spend another 50 years in the same pattern.
Áine and her husband met at 24 while working in New York, later moved to Chicago where they married. They had two children, aged nine and eleven, and blamed a "busy parenthood" routine for a bedroom dry spell.
They considered an open marriage, but Áine felt it would only be a band-aid.
Born in Portland and raised in Canada, Áine and her husband were highly compatible early on and enjoyed a healthy sex life until the births of their daughter in 2010 and son in 2013.
Motherhood and long work hours left little room for intimacy, and the couple fell into a marriage rut.
After the pandemic, Áine suggested they relocate to Los Angeles. They moved in July 2021, but the cracks in their relationship became apparent. Her husband preferred staying in the Midwest.
Áine began therapy to address childhood abuse trauma. Two years after the pivotal kitchen conversation, they divorced.
By September 2023, Áine owned an apartment in Los Angeles and alternated with her husband between the family home and the apartment.
She entered online dating, describing herself as an alternating single mom and single in the city. She tried dating younger men and attended a sex party to explore her sexuality.
She did not seek one-night stands, but a "pleasure partner" became a regular. She explained, "When I'm in town, I will call you, and if you're available, you can come over." They both enjoyed the arrangement.
Through sex, dating, and therapy, Áine discovered her own erotic signature and capacity for pleasure. She wanted to help other women do the same, leading her to become a Pleasure Priestess and erotic alchemy coach.
When asked if she is a sex therapist, she replies, "No, I'm really here to help you be your most expansive, expressed version of yourself." Calling herself a priestess reminds clients that pleasure can be sacred.
In group and one-on-one sessions, she works with women who have lived in a "desert of intimacy" in unhappy relationships. Many emerge with a "sl*t era" after marriage, ready to be fun and flirty.
Other clients are married and want to improve their sex lives. She notes, "If you have a willing partner, this work can be done in partnership." She authored a book titled Blow Up Your Life about her spiritual and sexual awakening.
She says, "You don't have to blow up your marriage, but you do need a desire to reclaim a part of yourself that you lost in motherhood or marriage."
Whether single or in a relationship, Áine encourages clients to ask, "Where would pleasure take me today?" and to trust themselves.
She reflects, "Life is full of storms: Parents get older, our kids go to college, grief comes up, we have financial bumps in the road. If we can allow ourselves to feel good even in the midst of things that are hard, those things don't hit us quite as hard."
Now single, she focuses on her coaching business, her book, a company she started with a best friend, and parenting two teens solo. She says, "There isn't a lot of room for dating, and I've already had my two years of play!"
She advises women stuck in a marriage rut: "Trust yourself. Start asking the question, 'What do I desire?' We are put on this planet with desires that lead us on a path. What is the whisper saying? What is calling to you?"
