Martha Stewart issued a statement after backlash over a Halloween costume that portrayed a homeless person. The outfit, which included tattered clothing, dirt-inspired face makeup and a sign reading "I am hungry. Help me!!," was posted to Instagram and then deleted when it drew criticism.

In a statement to Page Six released Sunday, Stewart said she was "distressed" that her costume "has offended people, which was never my intention." She added that the look was meant to "bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness."

Stewart continued, "Homelessness continues to remain one of America's greatest challenges and ongoing crises, something that I care deeply about and I have spent a significant amount of time and effort supporting charities that combat this ongoing social epidemic." She also said she remains "committed to continuing to make a difference."

On Saturday, Stewart posted a carousel of images of her yard with festive décor, captioned, "Halloween night Waiting for those who trick or treat!" In the days before the holiday, she appeared on "Today" to share Halloween entertaining ideas, including a no-bake spiderweb cheesecake, witches' brew, and a ghastly goulash, and noted that she "always enjoys getting dressed up in fun and creative costumes when my busy schedule allows."

Variety previously reported that Cate Blanchett will portray Stewart in the upcoming biopic "Good Thing," with "Zola" director Janicza Bravo directing the film.
