Michael Mann was hospitalized after he accidentally shot himself in the leg on Saturday at a Los Angeles gun range, the L.A. Police Department said.

According to TMZ, the director was trying to holster the firearm when it discharged, causing a superficial injury. The incident took place around 4 p.m. at Range L.A., and the police confirmed he was in stable condition when they received the call.

"On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released," Mann's reps said.

Mann is best known for directing films such as "Heat," "Thief," "Manhunter," "Collateral" and "The Insider." He last directed the 2023 sports biopic "Ferrari," starring Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari and Penelope Cruz as his wife Laura.

The 83-year-old filmmaker is currently working on "Heat 2," the long-awaited sequel to his 1995 crime drama. The first film, a box-office hit, followed an intense showdown between L.A.P.D. detective Lieutenant Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) and professional thief Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro). Mann adapted the screenplay for "Heat 2" from the 2022 novel of the same name, which he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner. The sequel, described as both a follow-up and prequel, will explore the early lives of Pacino and De Niro's characters and is expected to star Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale and Adam Driver.

During a 2025 masterclass at the Lumière Festival in France, Mann said, "The characters of 'Heat' are so alive to me. An idea occurred to me, based on the rapport between two lethal adversaries, Pacino's Hanna and De Niro's McCauley, about how to do both before the events of 'Heat' and after."
