Rugby league international Joe Westerman, 36, married local estate agent Alison Hopkinson in Scarborough on Monday, after a video of him in a dark alley in Pontefract sparked a scandal and his removal from the Castleford Tigers line-up.

The clip, which appeared on the eve of the 2023 Super League season, showed Westerman performing a sex act with a woman believed to be a friend of his wife and led to his dismissal from the club.

Weeks after the incident, Westerman announced his engagement to Hopkinson, and the couple exchanged vows after a two-year engagement, according to the Daily Star.

Westerman posted photos of the ceremony, writing: "A day we will never forget. Thank you to everyone who made it so special. Here's to our forever. The Westermans." The father of three wore a beige suit, while Hopkinson wore an A-line dress with a short train.

The newlyweds then travelled on holiday with their children, sharing further images on social media. One guest commented, "I'm crying again. The most perfect day for the most perfect couple."

His former wife, Laura Boyd, 38, also remarried weeks earlier to Karl Holmes, 38, and posted photos of her wedding and honeymoon.

Boyd and Westerman had been married since 2014 and have three children; their nine-year marriage ended in 2023 after she denied being the woman in the video. In a statement she wrote, "Can I make this VERY clear that this is NOT me. We have three children one of whom is almost 15 and she doesn't need to see things like this all over social media!"

Boyd previously told The Sun she received the video before it went online and added, "Truth is, he only told me because it was on social media. But I'm glad it was found because the thought of kissing him after that just makes me feel sick."

Westerman sent apologetic texts to Boyd, saying, "Words will never ever explain how sorry I am. I can't explain what happened cos I physically can't remember. It's disgusting and I now have to live with it forever. Losing you and the kids is heartbreaking Lauren, you deserve so much better."

After reports that the woman in the video was a friend of his wife, Westerman was expelled from his marital home. He later went public with Hopkinson, posting smiling pictures on Instagram.

The mother of two involved is thought to be estranged from her own husband, Carl, 38. Westerman also issued a public apology to family, friends, the club and the rugby league community after the incident, describing it as a 15-hour booze-fuelled binge.
