An eight-year-old girl is fighting for her life after a wolf mauled her inside the enclosure at Johannismühle wildlife park near Berlin.
Emergency crews rushed to the park after reports that the child had entered the pen with two other children and a staff member, and was attacked by "at least one wild animal".
The girl sustained severe head injuries, received on-site treatment from paramedics and was then airlifted to a specialist trauma clinic in Marzahn, where she remains in critical condition.
A police spokesperson said the incident was reported at 9.30 am in the Baruth area, a rescue helicopter landed and investigators are on site.
It is not yet clear why the child was inside the enclosure; investigators are probing a possible visitor-experience program that allowed feeding of the animals, according to BILD.
Park staff are being offered psychological support and the site was closed for the day.
Johannismühle, located about 28 miles from Berlin, houses grey and polar wolves, deer, birds and wildcats.
The attack follows a leopard incident in the Netherlands where a zookeeper in her 50s died three days after being mauled at Safaripark Beekse Bergen.
Colleagues said the woman, described as a "very experienced caretaker" with 25 years at the zoo, was found with severe head injuries and could not be saved despite emergency surgery.
The leopard involved will not be euthanised, and a probe is underway to determine how both tragedies occurred.
