Sir Tom Jones, the 86-year-old singer, has cancelled two American concerts after contracting a bad case of the flu and posted an apology on Instagram.

The Sun reported in September that the veteran performer was removed from The Voice UK judging panel after a 13-year stint.

Earlier this summer, Sir Tom launched his Come Gather Round World Tour across the UK and Europe before moving to North America.

He now says the Los Angeles show on Monday and the San Diego performance on Tuesday are postponed because of his illness.

In his Instagram post, the star wrote, "I've had a great time these last few weeks, completing 20 shows and singing for wonderful audiences across the USA, but unexpectedly I've been hit with a bad case of the flu. Following doctor's advice, I unfortunately have to reschedule tonight's show in Los Angeles and tomorrow's show in San Diego."

Fans responded with comments such as "We Love you!! Get well soon Sir Tom," "Take it easy, relax and get well soon sweetheart," "Wishing you a speedy recovery," and "Get well soon Sir Tom you are precious."

New dates have already been set: the San Diego concert will take place at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park on November 3, and the Los Angeles show will follow on November 4.

Sir Tom had been a judge on The Voice UK since its 2012 launch, apart from a one-year break.

A source told The Sun, "Everyone loves Sir Tom but there was a feeling that the upcoming series needed a major refresh. With Aitch and Cheryl coming on board and Kelly returning with will.i.am, there just wasn't a seat going."
