A search and rescue effort began after a stranded hiker's Garmin inReach satellite device transmitted an SOS signal from Sierra Buttes, an exposed summit standing at 8,600 feet in California.

The alert prompted emergency crews to mobilize and locate the three individuals who were stuck on the mountain's peak.
