## Article

A heartbroken mother whose 12-day-old son died after a falling avocado has accused the local council of failing to prune dangerous trees.

Lucas was cradled in his mother Giuliana Gomez's arms when a fruit from one of three avocado trees lining a school entrance dropped and struck him.

The incident occurred at about 8 am while Gomez was dropping her five-year-old son at a nursery in Quilmes, Argentina.

The avocado, weighing more than a kilo, fell from a height of 33 ft and caused multiple skull fractures to the newborn.

Gomez says she will pursue justice and hold the council responsible.

She alleges that for over a year residents and parents repeatedly asked officials to prune the branches, but no action was taken.

Gomez told local media: "They didn't come to prune the tree beforehand to prevent this. They've been asking for it to be cut down since 2025."

She added: "Avocados had already fallen at the entrance and exit of the nursery."

Gomez said: "We spoke to the management about it, and now the municipality has done nothing but put me in touch with a psychologist who asked me how my son was when he was already dead. Nobody else has called me. They're going to have to take responsibility."

Documents obtained by the family show the nursery requested removal of a tree on Conesa Street on August 8, 2025.

The newborn's uncle said the request followed an earlier incident in which a parent was knocked unconscious by a falling avocado that narrowly missed other children.

He criticised municipal workers for allegedly chopping the tree down "secretly" only after Lucas's death.

Fears about falling fruit had led the nursery to change its entrance to another street previously.

Gomez also criticised emergency services for a slow response.

Although the ambulance was based three streets away, a witness says it took 20 minutes to arrive and lacked adequate equipment for the newborn.

Ten minutes later Lucas's father rushed the child to Sanatorio de la Trinidad hospital in Quilmes.

The infant underwent three hours of surgery and was placed in intensive care.

He died from his injuries four days later on October 25.

In a farewell note, Gomez wrote: "Today, with my soul and heart shattered, I have to say goodbye to you, my son. Thank you for those few days of happiness and love you gave us."

She added: "I love, loved and will always love being your mum... With the strength I have left, I will seek justice for you and make sure this doesn't happen to anyone else."
