John McGuirk, an 83-year-old former pub landlord, died a week after falling on a Liverpool One bus on October 3, Merseyside Police said.

The sole passenger on the vehicle, McGuirk was from Croxteth and the incident occurred at about 12.55 pm.

Police are still probing the circumstances surrounding his death and have a 65-year-old man "currently assisting with enquiries," according to the force.

Family members described the late pensioner as a "much-loved" brother to his late sibling Tommy, a caring uncle to Sonia and Donna, and a proud great-uncle to Faye and Hazel.

They added that John was "a true character, full of life, who could talk to absolutely anyone" and had worked in pubs across Liverpool before becoming a familiar face at his kiosk in Liverpool Lime Street Station.

"You could never keep John quiet for long, and wherever he went, he was sure to know someone," the tribute read, noting his love for travel, meeting people and making memories.

The tribute continued, "Behind that larger-than-life personality was a man with a huge heart, who dedicated so much of his life to caring for his beloved brother Tommy."

Family mourned his loss, calling it "far too soon, in the most heartbreaking of circumstances," and said his absence will be deeply felt by friends, family and the wider Liverpool community.

"Liverpool has lost a familiar face, and we have lost someone irreplaceable," they wrote, adding that John will be remembered for his warmth, stories and unmistakable character.
