## Article

Jamie Carragher acknowledged he should have avoided attacking Aston Villa supporters after finding himself at the center of an online controversy this week.

The forty-eight-year-old former Liverpool player angered the Midlands club by telling Villa fans to, "shut the f*** up," while suggesting Manchester United should target Unai Emery.

Aston Villa released a brief statement confirming plans to launch legal action against Carragher.

During an appearance on Friday's Overlap Daily alongside Becky Ives and Mark Goldbridge, Carragher sought to explain his remarks.

The pundit stated, "It's grown arms and legs. I ended up telling them to F off which maybe I should've not done. But it was all in jest because they've been all over my social timeline."

He added, "So when I was saying F off, I was saying F off, off my socials. If you want to give me stick in the pub with Mr Goldbridge that's absolutely fine but stay off my socials! We'll all make it all up as I'm a big fan of Villa."

Goldbridge opened the segment joking about dressing up as Carragher for Halloween due to living near many Villa fans.

Carragher raised his arms and smiled, replying, "Honestly, unbelievable!"

He continued, "You're not allowed to give an opinion. I think Unai Emery is the best manager in the league and if you're Man Utd, thinking about getting a new manager, you're probably going to go 'what's the best we can get?' I'm not saying he'll go. I'm saying if it was me, I would ask the question. But I am intrigued by Unai Emery, in that, when you've got somebody so good, as a manager... It's not just Villa, there's lots of other teams... but there are teams that are elite; Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Man Utd, those type of teams. I'm just interested to know, would Unai Emery want to manage at that level again? Or is he thinking, 'I run the show at Villa, I can do what I want'. And certain managers are good at a certain level or certain clubs, and that's Unai Emery, reminds me a bit of Rafa (Benitez) really. He's had his go at PSG and Arsenal, it didn't work - but Seville, Villarreal, Aston Villa, Valencia, he's done really well. I still don't think the ego of anybody, whether you're a manager or a player, and someone said 'no, you're just that level', I think you're own ego would go 'no I'm not'. That was just my point."

Nassef Sawiris, Aston Villa co-owner and chairman, announced the club's decision to pursue legal steps against Carragher on Friday.

His statement read, "Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the club and its fans. Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football."

Emery, fifty-four, has managed at Villa Park since replacing Steven Gerrard in 2022.

The Spanish coach has enjoyed a successful period, leading Villa to win the Europa League last season.

Carragher praised Emery while discussing his views as pressure mounted on Manchester United boss Michael Carrick.

He stated on Stick to Football, "I think Unai Emery is unbelievable with what he does year after year. That amount of change, players needing time to settle and he does it year after year. But the reason I'm going to go back at Villa fans is I can't believe that a manager who is so successful in the Europa League - take a player, if you'd won the Europa League three or four times surely you'll then want to go for the Champions League. Aston Villa will never be Manchester United. I just think he didn't do well at PSG or Arsenal, and maybe that's because of egos in the dressing room and that sort of thing. But surely he would want that opportunity to manage a giant again. There is a chain in football, whether you like it or not. So Real Madrid will take Manchester United's best player, they did it with Cristiano Ronaldo. And there will be teams below Aston Villa, and they'll take their players or manager, so shut the f*** up Aston Villa fans. Aston Villa will never be Manchester United."
